Gendaigoyaku Shobogenzo – 現代語訳正法眼蔵 (Shobogenzo in Modern Japanese )

Nishijima Roshi spent more than 16 years translating the Shobogenzo into modern Japanese that could be read and understood by ordinary people. The zip file contains PDFs of all 12 volumes of that translation.

Japanese-English Shobogenzo

These PDF files contain bilingual texts of most of the chapters in Master Dogen’s Shobogenzo. They are arranged to make it easy to compare the original Japanese text directly with the English text from the Nishijima/Cross 4-volume translation (Windbell Publications), and they include the footnotes from that translation. This is a work in progress and will be updated as new files become available. The files were compiled by Shinji Okouchi, a member of Dogen Sangha Tokyo. He originally compiled them for Peter Rocca and Gerhard Wolfram to use in their Saturday lectures on the Shobogenzo in Tokyo, and has kindly agreed to make them available here.

The zip file contains PDFs of the chapters in Volumes 1 to 4 of the English edition of Shobobenzo plus Fukanzazengi.
